This listing is for solid Ipe Hanbo Staffs. The Hanbo Staff, Half Staff or Short Staff is a traditional Okinawan training tool used in the art of Kobudo style martial arts. Ipe is very hard exotic heavy wood, making these hanbo have a very heavy feel. The traditional length for a hanbo staff is 36", This listing has several lengths available. Including 42" which is a cross between the feel of a jo staff and a hanbo. All the staffs here have a constant diameter of 1 inch.
Ipe comes to twice as hard on the janka hardness scale as Hickory, making it able to resist denting more.. It is one of the hardest woods in the world. It has an amazing smooth sturdy feel and beautiful heavy dark brown color.
These staffs are finished with several coats of Traditional Linseed oil, which is preferred in the Martial Arts due to its smooth feel, while still maintaining the ability for a firm grip. It is easy to reapply. They are sanded smooth, and the edges are slightly rounded.
*This particular staff had a long hairline fracture down almost the full length of the staff. It has a very slight bend which is less then a quarter of an inch over its entire length, which I do not want to try to straighten due to the cracks. To make this staff useable I have filled the entire crack with a wood filler and put a waterproof coat over the entire staff. Making this staff have a permanent shine, and making it waterproof. The finish I use still allows the user to effortlessly slip their hands up and down the staff for perfect effortless technique. I do not recommend this staff for contact at all however due to the small fractures. I have reduced the price 15$ for the two flaws.
The pictures shown are generic in nature, and the staff you receive will be unique. Several of the pictures are taken in the sun, which show as a lighter brown color, however ipe is a very dark wood, and in most lighting situations, it is extremely dark.
