These are handmade rare Curly Hickory Wooden Bo Staffs. The Bo Staff is a traditional Okinawan training tool used in Kobudo style martial arts training. These particular staffs are 1" in diameter throughout its entire length. 72" is the traditional length for full-size bo staffs. Shorter sizes are available as well. These staffs are untapered.
The materials consist of solid hickory. Hickory is the hardest available North American Hardwood and is excellent for all uses. The specimens of hickory used in the making of these staffs are extremely rare. The striped pattern is holographic, meaning when you rotate the staff Infront of you, the dark sections become white, and the white sections become dark, as the light refracts off of the staff. The striped grain happens in trees that are under extreme pressure due to its weight or shape, and this causes the grain to fold on itself. These patterns are extremely rare and coveted and in these particular staffs, the pattern is unlike anything I have ever seen before.
*The hickory in these particular staff is a medium grade hard hickory, which means it is perfect for speed uses, as the weight lends itself to tournament use or solo demonstrations.

Also because of this effect, I do not recommend these staffs for contact, due to the non straight nature of the grain, and the chance that it could chip more easily then straight grain. However, these will be excellent for tournament use, solo use or hiking, or ren Faires. These are some of the rarest specimins immagineable for hickory.
Because of the wavy nature of the grain, there is a texture that you can feel in your hands as you slide up and down the staff, as your hand feels the varying grain shifts in the wood.
1" Staffs are best for speed and tournament use, or hiking, and are not intended in general for contact use. For contact purposes, please see our selection of 1,1/8 thickness or 1,1/4 which can be sure to hold up to the heaviest uses.
These particular staffs are all made from solid wood.
It is finished with several coats of Linseed and Beeswax oil and sanded to a fine finish, which gives it a permanent shine and and amazing feel in the which allows the hands to slip effortlessly up and down the staff.
